Bypass the Pop-up Blocker

Mandy Carter-Lowe

Have you ever noticed that what seems like the simplest technology tip often becomes the most useful? I am not sure whether I first learned this tip from one of Glenna’s wonderful FITT trainings or from a previous technology tip over the years, but it is one that I use almost every day.

Have you ever clicked on a link to open a document and had a yellow bar appear at the top of the screen? This is due to the pop-up blocker. Next time, hold down on the control key “CTRL” as you click on the link. This will bypass the pop-up blocker so that the dialog box for downloading the document will appear. You will be prompted to save the document to your computer or open the document. Also remember that downloaded files should be from a reliable source, or scanned for viruses before they are opened. I have found this technology tip most helpful when downloading my grades in WebCT so that I can transfer them to an Excel spreadsheet.

If you have any problems, be sure to seek the assistance of a Faculty Technology Mentor.  Our contact information can be found at http://www.columbiastate.edu/fitt/FTM/Faculty_Mentors.htm

Thanks!
