Use Outlook to Set Reminders

By Mandy Carter-Lowe

Did you know that you can use the calendar in Microsoft Outlook to set reminders?  Some of you may remember I ended the semester a little embarrassed for missing “my week”.  To make sure that didn’t happen again, I set a reminder on my Outlook calendar.  You can do the same for important events.  Here’s how you do it:

  1. In Outlook, click the calendar button in the bottom left column.
  2. Click New in the calendar tool bar.  This brings up the new box titled Appointment.
  3. The appointment box contains fields for you to enter information for the meeting such as subject, location, date, and time.
  4. Make sure the box in front of the Reminder field is checked.  You can also adjust how soon before the event you want the reminder.
  5. Click on Save and Close.
  6. Now, sit back and forget about it.  When the time for your event approaches, a box will pop-up on your screen to remind you.  (Note:  Your Outlook must be on for this to work.  I usually keep mine minimized throughout the day so that I can receive calendar reminders and new email notifications.)

By the way, you can also put your class times into the calendar so that you can receive continuous reminders throughout the semester just prior to the class starting.  That might be helpful for those of us that get caught up in our office working on something to suddenly discover that class starts in one minute.  You know who you are!!  I’ve seen you in the halls!!
